CONTINUING THE COMMITMENT TO TOMORROW'S TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERS
A potential future shortfall of well-trained transportation engineers has been identified, and this article points out a means of alleviating this shortcoming by funding scholarships for students to enter the transportation field. The Alabama section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers has initiated a successful program in this area. It funded an endowment to perpetually generate scholarships for transportation students. The details of the program are described. The article also reviews the high cost of a technical education to underscore the importance of financial aid to today's university student. Tuition, fees, and books cost $2,600 per year at a typical southeastern public university. Scholarships of this size or larger are appropriate for influencing a student's career choice.
