PILOT STUDY FOR A TWIN TUNNEL FIXED LINK BETWEEN SARDEGNA AND CORSICA

STUDIO DI MASSIMA PER UN COLLEGAMENTO FISSO CON GALLERIA A DOPPIO FORNICE TRA LA SARDEGNA E LA CORSICA

The proposed twin tube submarine tunnel between Sardegna and Corsica will connect Capo Falcone in Sardegna to Punta Specone in Corsica passing under the island of Lavezzi. Maximum sea depth under the Bocche di Bonifacio strait is 69 m and the tunnel will maintain a constant cover under the sea bed of approximately 50 m, except at the entrances where it will be reduced to 30 m. Maximum gradients will be little more than 3%. This article reports a pilot study of the project and gives details of design (including lining), layout, geology of the strait, excavation, ventilation, and cost estimates. (TRRL)
