THE SILENT ASPHALT ON THE INN MOTORWAY
L'ASFALTO SILENZIOSO NELL'AUTOSTRADA DELL'INN
Unlike the drainage asphalts generally adopted to date in Europe, the silent asphalt is not laid directly on to a bituminous or concrete carriageway surface, but is underlaid by an isolating layer which compensates tensile stresses. This interposed layer of high elastomer bitumen is sprayed on at a rate of 2.3 to 3.2 litres per square metre, adding precoated stone chippings (size 5/8 or 8/12) which are compacted into the binder with a rubber tyred roller. Onto this intermediate layer is then spread the high void content drainage layer (also of high elastomer bitumen). This article describes the application of the surfacing on a test section of the INN valley motorway at Angath. The advantages demonstrated by the test section are: an absorbtion capacity and permanent equivalent sound level reduction of 5 dbA; and a maximum tyre noise reduction of 15 dbA. (TRRL)
