PAVEMENT TEXTURE SIGNIFICANCE AND MEASUREMENT - WHY ARE PAVEMENTS SLIPPERY WHEN WET?

Pavement surface texture is crucial to the availability of the skid resistance of pavement surfaces, but it has significance also for the generation of noise and spray by the tires, and for the glare on wet nights.Present knowledge indicates that it is possible to design surface courses with texture that gives maximum performance in all the above respects, but much remains to be learned before all necessary information can be codified in ASTM standards.
