TRAVEL ACTIVITIES OF THE ELDERLY. TRENDS AND FUTURE PATTERNS

This report deals with issues related to the mobility of elderly people in Sweden. The first question discussed is whether the elderly in general travel less than other groups. Shifts at present under way in access to and use of different means of transportation are then analyzed. Factors causing the elderly to reduce their travel activities are identified. Finally forecasts of changing mobility patterns are presented. The focus is on the role of the car, public transportation and the social transport service in Sweden. Conclusions are drawn concerning the likely transportation needs of the elderly during the next decade.
