NEW ROUTES IN BORAAS. INVESTIGATIONS OF LATENT DEMAND FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN AN URBAN AREA

NYA LINJER I BORAAS. UNDERSOEKNINGAR AV HUSHAALLENS BEHOV AV UTVECKLAD KOLLEKTIVTRAFIK I EN STADSDEL

The purpose of this study is to investigate the need or latent demand for better public transportation in urban areas. It is a case study carried out in Boraas - a medium-size city of western Sweden. Different approaches and methods are used in a four-step process. First a target group is defined. Restricting factors are related to the timing of the households' mobility needs (during off-peak hours), their access to cars and the type of household. (The elderly are not included in the target group). Second, the city is mapped according to relevant social indicators and, by comparison, a decision is made as to where the latent demand is high. Third, potential activity locations - with low access by public transportation - are identified. Important locations are shopping and service, centers, high schools, sports arenas, leisure facilities and certain workplaces. Fourth, the need is further investigated and controlled by in-depth interviews. The result is a proposal of new routes meeting the latent demand for public transportation during off-peak hours.
