SHIP RESISTANCE TO CONTINUOUS MOTION IN MUSH ICE

Many papers in the literature have addressed the problem of predicting resistance to ship motion in solid field ice. Very few have attempted to address the more practical problem of ship motion in brash or mush ice which often clogs the harbors of northern rivers and the Great Lakes. This is a much more difficult analytical problem and to date, has evaded practical solution. This paper presents an analytical approach to the solution of the problem of ship resistance to continuous motion in mush ice. It is patterned on the analytical model and methodology which was developed to treat the problem of solid field ice, but modified to reflect the peculiar characteristics of mush ice. The resulting analytical model is shown to generate results which correlate well with the limited existing test data on both conventional polar icebreakers and Great Lakes ore carriers with their extensive parallel middlebody. A computer program based on various ship and ice parameters is presented to facilitate problem solution.
