SHEAR STRENGTH OF PLATE GIRDERS WITH WEB OPENINGS
This paper, which is limited to concentric, unreinforced, rectangular opening, derives a formula to predict the shear strength of plate girders with web openings based on the Basler approach, and evaluates the usefulness of the formuula for design. Comparison of predictions based on this formula with available test results shows that the formula greatly underestimates the shear strength of the test results. Therefore, it is recommended that although current U.S. specifications for plate girders for buildings and bridges are based on the Basler theory, the theory developed by Narayanan and Der-Avanessian (1985) be used for the design of plate girders with web openings.
