WALK ALERT - NATIONAL PEDESTRIAN SAFETY PROGRAM. FINAL REPORT

Engineering, law enforcement, and educational countermeasures to pedestrian traffic crashes have been identified through research and field testing. In order to implement these countermeasures as part of comprehensive traffic safety programs of communities nationwide, a study was undertaken which: (1) Identified adequate existing pedestrian safety educational materials and programs; (2) Developed a comprehensive set of materials including new materials to fill identified gaps in existing adequate materials and developed a community level program guide for the use of proven engineering, law enforcement and public educational techniques at the community level; (3) Developed a cooperative effort of the National Safety Council, FHWA, NHTSA and over 100 service and community groups to conduct safety programs at the community level to reduce the incidence of pedestrian traffic crashes; (4) Developed a State level network in 10 States to provide guidance and funding of community level pedestrian safety programs; (5) Pilot tested the program and its materials and implemented the program in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and (6) Initiated, organized, and implemented ongoing WALK ALERT programs in 10 States and a major city.
