IMPLEMENTING HEADWAY-BASED RELIABILITY CONTROL ON TRANSIT ROUTES

The results are reported of a 1987 implementation of real-time (headway-based) control strategies on candidate bus routes operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) that exhibited service reliability problems. This was done in an attempt to not only improve service reliability as perceived by travelers, but also to allow for a more effective utilization of resources. The details of the headway based holding strategy are described. Characteristics of transit routes where such a strategy is likely be most beneficial are shown in a crosstown route operating at service frequencies, where random passenger arrivals to bus stops are generally expected.
