POSITION AND PRIORITY RULES OF CYCLISTS AND MOPED RIDERS ON "NEW STYLE" ROUNDABOUTS
POSITIE EN VOORRANGSREGELING VAN FIETSERS EN BROMFIETSERS OP ROTONDES "NIEUWE STIJL"
During the last decade roundabouts have had a revival in the Netherlands. For that reason a theoretical review and evaluation has been made of different variants of roundabouts with respect to the traffic safety of cyclists and moped-riders. This study regards the "new style" roundabouts on which the motorized traffic on the roundabout has priority. In the first part of the study aspects of traffic engineering of the various roundabout types are listed, criteria for traffic safety are developed using a task analysis of cyclist and moped riders. In the second part a number of roundabout types are tested using these criteria. It is concluded that three variants are relatively safe for cyclists and moped riders. Safety depends on the presence of a cycle track on which moped riders are allowed to drive or not, and upon the priority rules. Segregation of cyclist and moped-riders from other motorized traffic on roundabouts is the most ideal. (TRRL)
