NURSING INVOLVEMENT IN MOTOR VEHICLE OCCUPANT PROTECTION. FINAL REPORT

The American Nurses' Association developed and implemented an automobile occupant protection education program for the nursing profession under a $96,000 grant from the Department of Transportation. The purpose of this was to increase nurses' involvement in promoting the use of occupant protection devices, and to promote the prevention of motor vehicle trauma as an integral part of the nurse's role in providing public health education. These goals were accomplished through the following activities: (1) 8 state nurses associations recieved incentive awards to conduct a 12-month program; (2) Pennsylvania SNA produced a research study to determine nurses' belt use and the extent of their efforts in safety belt education; (3) Maine SNA produced a 3-minute videotape on the correct use of child safety seats; (4) over 600 ANA Occupant Protection Audiovisual Resource Kits were requested and sent to individual nurses; (5) the program was promoted at ANA Biennial Convention; (6) safety belt article and special supplements were published in 16 ANA and SNA publications; (7) a national conference concerning the nurses' role in preventing motor vehicle trauma was held in conjunction with the LifeSavers/6 conference in San Diego; (8) approximately 800 registered and 26 regional/state workshops.
