VISCOSITY/PENETRATION RELATIONSHIPS OF BITUMENS AT 25 DEG C --BITUMEN, FLEXIBLE AND DURABLE. 3RD EUROBITUME SYMPOSIUM 1985, THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS, SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1985

RELATIONS VISCOSITE - PENETRATION DES BITUMES A 25 DEG C

Rheological consistency curves at 25 deg c for various types of bituminous binders have been drawn up with the sliding plate microviscometer. The purpose was to calculate numerical values practically identical with those determined using the standard method of test for penetration or a new procedure particularly adapted to smaller samples. With the experimental viscosity/penetration relationships based on a purely rheological test, it is possible to characterize, with reliability and in terms of standard needle penetration values, the consistency of bitumens, only small samples of which are available. For instance, it is the case of extracted and recovered binders from bituminous wearing courses: at the present time, with the ever growing interest in recycling old bituminous pavement materials, the need is more pressing of being able to assess, reasonably accurately, the properties of the binder in the material to be recycled. The investigated bituminous binders are petroleum bitumens of penetration grades 10/20 to 80/100, extracted and recovered bitumens and modified bitumens with the addition of polypropylene. For the bituminous binders with a shearing viscosity greater than 10-5 pa.s, at 25 deg c and tangential stress of about 5 x 10-4 Pa, the viscosity/penetration relationship is represented satisfactorily by the equation given in the paper.
