THE CHEMISTRY OF FILM-FORMING RESINS

Information is presented about the fundamentals of resin technology to help end users evaluate and select coatings for particular applications. Liquid coatings are converted to dry films by one of 5 distinct mechanisms. The properties of the film are determined primarily by the process by which it is formed. For each process, this article discusses the mechanism, gives generic examples of film-forming resins that are used as binders for corrosion control, and explains how the film-forming mechnanism influences the properties of the dry film. The mechanisms are discussed in the order of their importance in modern coatings for controlling corrosion. Coatings formed by addition reactions, epoxies and polyurethanes, are discussed. Solvent evaporation is discussed with reference to vinyl resins. Inorganic silicate binders, oil paints, alkyd resins, and water borne polymers are discussed.
