ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF NATURAL SLOPES WITH EMPHASIS ON PROGRESSIVE FAILURE. PROCEEDINGS OF THE ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING, SAN FRANCISCO, 12-16 AUGUST 1985

Weak zones and pore pressure changes play a great role for the general performance and the stability of long natural slopes in clay. Of special importance is the softening behaviour of thin layers, which are subjected to large shear deformations. The softening in such shear layers may, in fact, cause progressive failure due to the influence of time dependent load, excavations or changes in pore pressure. A simplified one-dimensional finite element analysis will provide a practically applicable tool for the investigation of the progressive collapse and in which manner the failure will propagate. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 287689. (Author/TRRL)
