SAND-GRID DEMONSTRATION ROADS CONSTRUCTED FOR JLOTS II TESTS AT FORT STORY, VIRGINIA

This project was conducted to demonstrate the capability of the sand-grid road concept to support the heavy traffic loads and high traffic volumes of rubber-tired vehicles associated with logistics over-the-shore (LOTS) operations. During these tests, the road suffered one failure in a tight curve due to turning truck traffic and some additional damage due to storms and tracked vehicles. In general, the road remained in fair condition throuhout the tests and retained its load-carrying capabiliies. The demonstration roads constructed and tested at Fort Story demonstrated the practicality and applicability of the sand-grid concept for increasing off-load efficiency during LOTS operation.
