PROPELLER STRAIN MEASUREMENTS AND VIBRATION MEASUREMENTS ON THE SS MICHIGAN
The paper is intended to acquaint the reader with the nature of the test program and to discuss the results of some of the preliminary analyses. The tests performed on the strain measurements indicate that the data are reliable provided that zero shifts and other factors are taken into account. The data, with the propeller shape, indicate that a pitching torque exists on the propeller in operation and that the peak tensile stresses occur near the 0.5 chord. The analyses of the vibration measurements are reported under the headings: General Hull Criticals; Local Vibrations in the Stern; Vibrations of the Super-structure; Vibrations in the Machinery Space; Longitudinal Vibration of the Shafting; Vibrations During Maneuvering; and Hull Motion Patterns at Resonances. Various graphs are provided to show pertinent relationships.
