TRAFFIC HANDLING AROUND MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES ON FREEWAYS

Proper management coupled with traffic demand data, public announcements, and new and creative signing can reduce the effect of maintenance activities on the motoring public. This report describes a demonstration of traffic handling on 5 miles of a Houston freeway during joint repair activities. Two methods were used to reduce traffic demand: close upstream entrance ramps; and capture and remove from the freeway, traffic in the outside lane prior to the work zone. Further suggestions are made for catchy message signs, training for flagmen, walkie talkie radio communication, and rapid removal of accidents and stalled vehicles.
