APPLICATIONS OF VTOL AND STOL AIRCRAFT BOSTON TO WASHINGTON

The transportation problem in the Boston-New York-Washington complex is rapidly becoming a mass transportation problem In order to avoid future traffic strangulation, a thoroughly integrated total transportation system must be developed in a timely manner. studies have shown that in such a total transportation system the VTOL short haul transport aircraft will play a vital role, and that STOL aircraft will offer only limited service. A penetrating analysis of the requirements of the system, including considerations of aircraft performance capabilities, traffic potential, operating economics, required schedule frequency, all-weather operation, schedule reliability, and the sociological and political factors pertaining to safety and community noise, form the basis for a set of design requirements for the VTOL short haul transport. A correlation of this set of requirements with the current and projected state-of-the-art of airframe and propulsion technology reveals that a thoroughly practical and useful aircraft can be produced. With the airplane configuration concept established, and the operating characteristics identified, an operational analysis is presented. The operational analysis deal with the practical problems of operating commercial VTOL aircraft in a congested metropolitan environment.
