RELIABILITY DESIGN CRITERIA FOR SHIPPING INDUSTRY

Discusses the establishment of criteria on reliability, and describes techniques for measuring whether such criteria have been met for a design. By dividing the reliability problem into problems of operational availability and safety from accidents, the inherently different nature of problems related to human safety are distinguished from the problems of technical and financial trade-offs. In the discussion of structural design criteria the capability - demand concept is stressed, whereas in the discussion of design criteria for machinery, emphasis is placed on the trade-off between different risk groups and the relation to detail requirements. The paper concludes with a recommendation of the probabilistic approach to reliability design criteria as being a rational method in quantifying the concept of safety at sea.
