MOVEMENTS AS A PART OF DAILY LIFE PART I

VERPLAATSINGEN ALS ONDERDEEL VAN HET ALLEDAAGS BESTAAN DEEL I

During the past decade social and political thinking on traffic and transport has much changed. The starting points of growth and freedom of consumption have given place to questions of the quality of the environment, social equality and effectiveness and too great a transport compulsion. This change in problem statement made new theories and methods in traffic and transport research necessary. New explanations and interpretations of the sociological sciences were tried. In the field of individual mobility and its determinants three theoretical points of view are useful (1) psychological behaviour theory (2) the sociology of every day life and (3) time geography. Here the importance of traffic and transport in relationship with every day life is considered mainly. The starting points, results and efficiency of time geography are discussed. In a following article the household activity travel simulator (hats) method will be introduced. (TRRL)
