The study is the first part of the research project "Road Users' Demand for Road Evenness andd Geometry". A cost account of the Swedish transport mileage during 1980 was carried out and the relation between road roughness and vehicle costs was investigated. On the basis of this material a computer calculation system was developed that could be used for calculation of optimum surfacing quality of the road network. (TRRL)
