USE OF OVALIZATION IN PAVEMENT CONDITION SURVEYING
UTILISATION DE L'OVALISATION EN AUSCULTATION DES CHAUSSEES
Progress achieved in pavement mechanics with respect to structural design methods has led to new requirements in surveying equipment for obtaining information on stresses and strains in pavement layers. The ovalization technique based upon the measurement of the deformation of a core hole meets these requirements when used in conjunction with theoretical models. The article reviews the measurement principle and presents the ovalization test. Three explanatory models used in connection with data analysis are described. The most recent one based upon the finite element method, constitues a very effective tool for interpretation in the most difficult cases. An application example is presented.
