METHODS FOR THE INDIRECT MEASUREMENT OF PARTICLE SHAPE AND DETERMINATION OF MICA CONTENT IN GRAIN SIZE DISTRIBUTION 0.074-4 MM

METODER FOER INDIREKT MAETNING AV KORNFORM OCH BESTAEMNING AV GLIMMERHALT I FRAKTIONEN 0,074-4 MM

Trials have been made to investigate the importance of mica and particle shape on the compaction in grain-size 0.074-4 mm. Tests have been made with methods like particle index (ASTM d 3398), angularity number (BS 812), porosity, laboratory penetration test and point-counting with a microscope. Only the particle index reflects the influence of particle shape to a sufficient degree for a test method. The free mica content does not stand in relation to any of the above mentioned methods. Mica is an extreme particle form. Tests have been made on wellrounded sands, crushed rock, mica-rich rock and blast furnace slag. (Author/TRRL)
