EARLY CONTROL OF THE QUALITY OF CONCRETE AT THE LAYING STAGE. APPLICATION IN THE FACTORY AND ON CONSTRUCTION SITES

CONTROLE PRECOCE DE LA QUALITE DU BETON EN OEUVRE. APPLICATION EN USINE ET SUR CHANTIER

The author proposes a method of controlling the quality of young concrete products in the factory and in structures cast in situ. This two-part control consists in: (1) controlling the concrete, not only by strengthening the control of the ingredients, manufacturing equipment, laying methods and characteristics at an early age, but also in carrying out a strength test at 24 hours on samples cured under warm water at 60 degrees C. If this thermal treatment proves difficult to carry out, it can be replaced with a test at 48 hours without accelerated curing of the concrete but using the hydration heat of cement by utilizing moulds with insulated sides; (2) control of applied concrete by means of non-destructive tests at an early age: determination of the velocity of wave propagation and measurement of the surface hrdness with a sclerometer. These measurements are carried out on concrete elements at the time of removal of the formwork. The study highlighted the advantages of carrying out preliminary calibration operations specific to the mix design formula selected. (TRRL)
