RECORD OF THE WORKSHOP ON SUBSOIL DRAINAGE

A summary of proceedings is followed by abstracts of papers presented: Mositure Content Under Roads in the Australian Environment (Morris, PO and Gray, W); A Review of Subsoil Drainage (Forrester, K); Materials for Subsoil Drains (Jones, JR); Materials for Subsoil and Subgrade Drainage (Lowe, PW); Subsoil Drainage Practice on Rural Freeways in NSW (Anderson, JB and Tinni, A); Urban Practice in Subsoil Design and Construction (Neeson, JA); Current Practices in Subsoil Drainage by CRB, VIC (Durant, DN); Subsoil Drainage Problems Associated with Pavement Construction in Tasmania (Wettenhall, P); Subsoil Drainage Problems in Queensland (Murphy, HW). Understanding and controlling moisture movements in subgrades and pavements are fundamental aspects of road engineering and are not given the attention warranted. Techniques used to control subsoil moisture have varied and changes have resulted from a better general understanding of moisture movements. Longitudinal subsoil drains are commonly installed in urban areas where subgrades are permeable and pavements are constructed below natural surface level. To combat the effects of subsoil moisture, techniques have been used such as permeable drainage courses within or under pavements, stabilised semi- rigid pavement courses and local pavement thickening. Subsoil drainage is a design matter and higher geometric standards increase subsoil drainage problems. Further research is necessary into relations between pavement materials and cross-section design and subsoil moisture movements over a wide range of climatic conditions, verification of filter media design parameters, utilisation of filter materials which do not meet the design parameters, investigation of filter fabrics and stabilised filter materials.
