NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF SNCF ROLLING STOCK COMPONENTS
The importance of checking the condition of railway rolling stock on acceptance as well as while in service no longer needs to be demonstrated. In this article are explained the non-destructive test methods employed for this purpose: visual examination, heat tests, magnetoscopy, eddycurrent testing, ultrasonic testing, X-ray photography. For each method, details are given of the principles on which it is based, the sphere of application, the limitations as well as the anticipated improvements. Each method is illustrated by a few typical examples. The automation of equipment and computer processing, which is now being extended, make the intepretation of results all the easier.
