THE DESIGN OF OPEN LOOP SEGMENTED SKIRTS

Amongst the different varieties of skirt currently in use or envisaged for amphibious hovercraft, that of the open loop segmented type combines the advantages of good performance at sea with relative simplicity of manufacture and ease of maintenance. It also lends itself to a theoretical design treatment. By neglecting the weight and stiffness of the material, equations of equilibrium may be defined and used to draw families of loop and tie-cord sections. These may in turn be used with the hull section drawings to design a skirt with the required geometry. Of importance in the design process is a knowledge of how the choice of skirt geometry influences the craft static stability. This is examined from theorectical considerations as a function of loop and tie-cord attachment positions, loop radius, segment angle and vertical centre of gravity position. The validity of the theory is discussed in the context of results achieved with a 1,600 kg craft.
