THE LOCAL AUTHORITY ASSOCIATIONS' CODE OF GOOD PRACTICE FOR HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE

This report outlines the main objectives of the code of good practice for highway maintenance which is based on the Marshall report: (1) to encourage highway authorities to use a systematic approach to decision making within a consistent framework; (2) to provide a common basis for assessing the overall maintenance need, resource requirement and implications; (3) to reduce the present inconsistencies in highway maintenance standards; (4) to assist in the more effective allocation of national and local resources; (5) to encourage the regular review of policies, standards and the effectiveness of maintenance programmes.
