DIGITAL PICTURE PROCESSING AND PATTERN RECOGNITION WITHIN URBAN PLANNING AND BUILDING RESEARCH

DATORSTOEDD BILDBEHANDLING I SAMHAELLSPLANERING OCH SAMHAELLSBYGGNAD

The aim of this project is to study the possibilities in using digital image processing techniques and pattern recognition methods within urban planning and building research. The report gives a brief introduction to basic concepts and techniques. Notes about hardware and software facilities are given. In one chapter examples are given of applications in the field of urban planning and building research. A catalogue of new possible applications is presented. The conclusions of the study are: (1) pictures or sequences of pictures often contain enough information to identify objects, characteristics of objects and relations of objects. (2) the development of fast image processors and more efficient pattern recognition methods will increase the possibilities of automatic interpretation of image information. (3) methods using digital images have been superior to traditional one-dimensional methods in various applications. The final conclusion is that image processing techniques and pattern recognition methods can be developed into very effective tools, which can be used in urban planning and building research. This can contribute to better knowledge of human behaviour and vehicle characteristics in different environments. (Author/TRRL)
