TRAFFIC SIMULATOR FOR VEHICLE DYNAMICS RESEARCH
KOERSIMULATOR FOER FORDONSDYNAMISK FORSKNING
In control engineering terms, the vehicle and driver constitute a closed control system. Human reactions cannot be described easily in mathematical terms, and use of a driver in combination with the analytical instrument provided by the vehicle simulator is therefore desirable. The driver drives as in an ordinary car, and the reactions of the vehicle are computerised and fed back to the driver through his sense organs. Work on the simulator began in the seventies, and study of the VW simulator exerted great influence. Financial assistance was obtained for the purchase of expensive visual and inertia systems. In comparison with visual systems used in conventional aircraft simulators, this system is very advantageous from the points of view of performance and costs. The system can at present provide: (1) a road with bends and inclines; (2) single- or multilane roads, rural different road markings; (4) different road surface textures; (5) signs and objects at side of road; (6) colours can be varied, fog and dark can be partly simulated; (7) the system generates three TV images edge-to-edge. Further development remains concerning objects which change in perspective. Studies of the effects of alcohol and drugs, and various disabilities, have been made. (TRRL)
