SKILL TRAINING: AN INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR DWI (DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED) OFFENDERS
The influence on accident history of the interaction between problem drinking and emotional tension has been clearly demonstrated. A behavioral intervention program for persons convicted of driving while intoxicated is currently being developed, pilot tested, and evaluated as a potential driver improvement program. The program consists of eight hours of instruction and behavioral practice of self-control skills that the individual can use to deal effectively with high risk drinking and driving situations. The background and rationale for the program is presented in terms of a model of the traffic accident causation process. The implications of this model for the program are discussed.
