THE POSSIBILITIES AND LIMITATIONS OF INFORMATION ON QUESTIONS OF ACTIVE CAR SAFETY--RESULTS OF A LARGE-SCALE STUDY OF SINGLE-CAR ACCIDENTS

MOEGLICHKEITEN UND GRENZEN DES AUSSAGEBEREICHES ZU FRAGEN AKTIVEN SICHERHEIT - ERKENNTNISSE AUS EINER GROSSZAHLUNTERSUCHUNG VON PKW- ALLEINUNFAELLEN

By comparing the huk large-scale accident material with other studies of real-life accidents on the subject of "active safety" a survey of the aims, areas covered and the scope of the results of such studies in Germany is given. Although experience shows that certain percentages of accident frequencies emerged, problems still result from definitions with limited precision and the failure to eliminate inadmissible factors from the material. As an improvement on the global breakdown of the scene of the accident into a bend or a straight road, as has been the practice up to now, the present study uses expanded beginning/end characteristics over the entire course of the road in the area of the disturbance to the driver/vehicle control loop. For single-car accidents a new, comprehensive systematisation for describing the crisis situation is presented for discussion. It uses objective facts to define the appropriate external conditions of the accident situation. The criterion for this is the "driving situation at the onset of the disturbance" and, as a subsequent criterion, the "sequence of disturbance factors". The application of this systematisation to some 600 single- car accidents showed the advantages of this procedure by elucidating the correlations according to the accident situation or the driver/vehicle characteristics. The number of cases needed for this presents problems, especially as elimination of inadmissible factors in the driver/vehicle control loop (e.g. the influence of alcohol) is necessary is necessary.
