WIDE-CUT FUEL INJECTION PHENOMENA

The injection parameters of five different mixtures of diesel oil D2 with petroleum light distillate fractions were investigated experimentally and by computer calculations. The goal of this research program is to find out an efficient alternative fuel for diesel engines used particularly in vehicles, tractors etc in the case of an unexpected short-term fuel crisis. The first part of the tests was performed on a conventional fuel injection system with inline pump, to study the injection parameters of alternative fuels. It is established that an increase of light fraction percentage in the fuel and the involved change of physical properties decreases fuel injection pressure, maximum and mean injection rate and increases injection duration, Sauter mean drop diameter, spray tip penetration and spray-piston surface contact area. The endurance tests and various other investigations on the engine are still underway. (Author/TRRL)
