NATIONAL GRADES FOR CONCRETE - PROGRESS TOWARDS A SYSTEM OF SPECIFYING CONCRETE BY STRENGTH GRADE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

Progress by the BRMCA/CMF/C&CA Working Party is reported, of the development of strength grades, designated national durability grades and national concrete grades, to enable compliance with specified cement contents and water/cement ratios to be confirmed by testing for strength. The reasons are identified for the failure of strength grades to provide this assurance in the past and measures proposed to ensure that the problem does not recur. The paper describes the process of selecting values of national durability grade and national concrete grade from a national survey of mix design data to ensure compliance for 96% of all UK materials combinations. The paper concludes with the Working Party's proposals for developing a national catalogue of mixes in which all common uses of concrete will be linked directly to strength grades.
