EVALUATION OF INNOVATIVE CONCEPTS RELATING TO PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PAVEMENTS--VOLUME 5

This report presents an evaluation of three methods for post-tensioning concrete pavements without embedded steel tendons. All methods permit joint movement while maintaining slab prestress at the pavement joint. One method consists of thin-wall hydraulically presurized bellows as stressing elements. The second uses a pnuematically charged rubber bladder. The third method makes use of stacked Belleville springs. Three prototypes were constructed and tested in the laboratory. Test conditions included joint movement and simulated traffic loading. The Belleville spring system was selected as most promising for use in prestressed pavement overlays on the basis of performance and cost. (FHWA)
