This article is a review of the state of the art in relation to motorway safety in France, based on the responses of the French motorway concessionaries to a questionnaire covering the following aspects: (1) safety in relation to traffic control; (2) safety deriving from better information; (3) safety in relation to services provided by the concessionary agencies; (4) safety by means of educating motorway users; (5) safety in relation to improved maintenance and winter driveability; and (6) lorries and the transport of dangerous materials.
