FLEXIBILITY COEFFICIENTS FOR THE DESIGN OF PILES AND PILE GROUPS

A pile group subjected to vertical and horizontal loads will deflect and rotate. Charts of flexibility coefficients are provided to enable the designer to check whether the deflections and rotations in a given system are acceptable, and to investigate the effect of varying the geometry of the pile group and the material and dimensions of the individual piles. These charts were derived from a parametric study using the Department of Transport's computer program PGROUP. Charts are also presented which summarise the change of stiffness produced by modifying the number of piles in groups of any size. If necessary, the forces and stresses in individual piles may be finally checked using the pgroup program, when a suitable pile design has been derived with the aid of the charts. The design process is illustrated by worked examples. (Author/TRRL)
