MECHANICS OF BALLAST COMPACTION. VOLUME 5: SUMMARY REPORT

This report summarizes the results of research on the mechanics of ballast compaction. Details are provided in four preceeding reports. The scope of this summary includes: (1) a description of ballast physical state, (2) methods developed for measuring the physical state in-situ, (3) the effects of tamping, traffic and compaction on ballast physical state, (4) the influence of compaction parameters on the amount of compaction, (5) an assessment of the benefits of crib and shoulder compaction, and (6) recommendations for further research.
