LATERITES USED AS ROAD CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS IN GABON

LES LATERITES DU GABON DANS LE DOMAINE ROUTIER

This study deals with gravelly laterite, which is practically the only type usable in road construction. It contains data on: (1) resources, exploration and exploitation; (2) characteristics and dispersion of results; (3) use of laterites in road construction; (4) contribution to the study of the N'Koltang deposit located near Libreville, in particular stabilization with sand, lime and cement; (5) construction of two sites with cement stabilized laterite; (6) economic considerations. The study shows the random nature of the geotechnical properties found during the quarrying of large deposits and, therefore, the difficulty of deriving reliable stabilization formulae for roadbases.
