THE STABILIZATION OF CLAY MATERIALS WITH FERRIC BASE CHEMICAL PRODUCTS

STABILAZZAZIONE DEI MATERIALI ARGILLOSI CON PRODOTTI CHIMICI A BASE FERRICA

Glotal is the commercial name of an iron based chemical byproduct (essentially 45% ferric sulphate and 34% calcium sulphate) which derives from the processing of ilmenite for the production of titanium dioxide. This article reports experiments in the stabilization with glotal of a typical clay from the Pisa region of Italy, in order to reduce its susceptibility to water and improve its mechanical characteristics for use in road construction. Results show that the maximum stabilizing factor is 5%, above which there is no further improvement in the mixture. (TRRL)
