EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH ON PROPELLER DAMPING IN TORSIONAL VIBRATIONS OF MARINE PROPULSION PLANTS

The Registro Italiano Navale, in co-operation with the University of Rome, with the Italian Navy, with FIAT Marine Division-Turin, with Grandi Motori Trieste and with the financial assistance of the Italian National Research Council, carried out and is still carrying out a series of experiments with screw propeller models at the Water Tunnel of the Italian Navy in Rome, aimed at determining the value of the damping coefficient due to screw propellers in torsional vibrations of marine propulsion plants, depending on the geometrical parameters of the propellers themselves, as well as on other operating parameters. This paper describes the design and building of the experimental apparatus and the results of the first two stages of the research as well as the scopes of the future research.
