ESTIMATING SUBGRADE MOISTURE FOR PAVEMENT DESIGN - A SIMPLE METHOD

Determination of the subgrade strength under soaked condition in terms of soaked CBR value, as is mostly being practised in India results in grossly underestimating the subgrade strength and consequently the design pavement thickness works out to be highly uneconomical. For A realistic evaluation of subgrade strength, it is essential to determine it under equilibrium moisture conditions anticipated in the subgrade during the design life of the pavement. A mathematical moisture, involving only simple parameters like particle size distribution, plasticity index, dry density, ground water table depth and rainfall, was evolved and is presented in this paper. The developmentof this expression was based on an analysis of field and laboratory data obtained from 206 road sections spread over eight states of the country, covering a wide spectrum of variables which influence the critical subgrade soil types, ground water conditions, rainfall and other climatic conditions.
