ESTIMATION OF RISK OF DEFORMATION WHEN ASPHALT PAVEMENTS ARE LAID WITH NEW WEARING COURSE. PILOT STUDY

BEDOEMNING AV DEFORMATIONSRISKER NAER ASFALTBELAEGGNINGAR FOERSES MED NYA SLITLAGER. EN PILOTSTUDIE MED MATERIAL FRAAN VAESTERAAS

The aim was to estimate the risk of deformation when city streets are laid with new wearing course. The method used was an investigation of a number of beams sawn out from five different pavements. In the laboratory the beams were furnished with new wearing courses. After that the beams were loaded in laboratory tests, and the permanent deformation was localized and measured. It appeared that all the beams were deformed though to a different extent. Intermediate layers such as for instance the previous wearing course and occasionally the latest performed layer were in general most affected. The important question whether and when rutting would arise in practice in the different structures tested can at present not be answered. However, many things indicate that the risks of getting future deformation are reflected by the magnitude of the permanent deformations obtained in the laboratory tests. The same thing can be said about the risks of getting fatigue cracks in the lower edge of the respective layers. Crack formation was most apparent in the thinner structures and did not occur in the thickest. (TRRL)
