THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF FIXED LIGHTING FOR ARTERIAL ROADS AND FREEWAYS : PROCEEDINGS OF A WORKSHOP HELD AT ARRB, 1979 DECEMBER 11-12

Over recent years there have been changes in the technology and engineering of road lighting for traffic routes. This is most evidenced by the availability and use of computer techniques for the design and evaluation of road lighting installations. The report first examines the principles and engineering components of lighting, describing the relationship between the observer, the luminaire and road surface. The scope and application of Australian code is discussed and contrast is then made with the use of computer techniques in the design process. The availability and scope of the computer programs to calculate road lighting performance is discussed and the application of two CIE programs to Australian conditions is investigated. The CIE standard luminance program is examined in detail and several worked examples are given. ARRB special report 18 (IRRD no 239522). Freeway lighting, the data of which has been derived from a computer program, is examined and examples of the uses to which the data can be put are given. The implications of road and traffic engineering, lighting equipment and maintenance considerations to road lighting design are discussed. Finally a case study on the design of a freeway lighting installation is given to illustrate the practical application of the methods and guidance given earlier in the report (a).
