FREIGHT TRANSPORT INSIDE URBAN AREAS BLOCK "MYREN", HUDDINGE

I TRASPORTI DI COSE ALL'INTERNO DELLE AREE URBANIZZATE

In this study of freight transport activity a distinction is made between "transport" and "distribution", which though integrated in the event, are nonetheless developed as separate specialities; inasmuch as "transport" mainly requires heavy vehicles and "distribution" uses medium to light vehicles. It is estimated that 50% of distribution vehicles operate permanently in the large urban areas, which are also large sorting and clearing centres; and distribution traffic is calculated as 40% of total freight traffic. Tables show a classification of types of transport and distribution vehicles, as well as an analysis of specific operating and fuel consumption costs. Factors which negatively affect carrier-dispatch activities are discussed, and some recommendations are made for the economic improvement of freight distribution in urban areas. (TRRL)
