A METHOD OF MEASURING THE UNIT STRENGTH OF LIGHTWEIGHT CLAY AND EXPANDED SHALE AGGREGATES

UNE METHODE DE MESURE DE LA RESISTANCE UNITAIRE DES GRANULATS LEGERS D'ARGILE ET DE SCHISTES EXPANSES

The authors describe in detail the hydrostatic pressure method used and give a number of examples of application: (1) investigation of the correlations between the strength and the physical characteristics of lightweight clay and expanded shale aggregates. 3 factors govern the strength of an aggregate: its density, volume, and texture; (2) improvement of the strength/density; (3) control of manufacture. Attention is drawn to the fact that this method of measuring the strength of lightweight aggregates facilitates numerous studies of lightweight aggregates and raw materials from which they are manufactured.
