A NEW ASPECT FOR TOTAL NAVIGATION CONTROL SYSTEM

In recent years, with the development of electronics, many new nautical instruments such as NNSS, anti-collision radar etc. have been installed on board. However, a new problem has arisen; the officer on watch is flooded with and confused by too much navigational information provided by many kinds of nautical instruments, thus, it becomes difficult to comprehend his ship's condition and that of the surrounding area quickly and exactly. This report analyzes navigation as a system, and discusses the necessary quality and timing of information and how to treat them. Special consideration is given to chart information, which is necessary in almost all navigational conditions, so it should be the basic data for the total navigation control system as well as radar information. In order to achieve this, the necessary information which is used in usual navigation, is picked up from the chart which contains a great deal of information, and programmed and packed in a computer memory. In this way, the handling of chart information becomes easier. Lastly this report introduces the outline of Mitsubishi TONAC system which was developed as a total navigation control system incorporating above research.
