SHIP DESIGN AND SHIP BUILDING ASPECTS
New shipbuilding concepts, conversions, and general simplification of barge carrier designs are discussed with reference to cutting building costs and using alternative ways of loading/unloading the barges, avoiding any mechanical means for lifting, which are considered complicated and expensive. Catamarans with barges carried on deck are considered as particularly suitable in this respect, since there is relative freedom to choose suitable proportions of the loading decks, provided that the special strength problems connected with this type of vessel are solved. The catamaran type also lends itself for building afloat, the weight of the primary hull sections to be lifted into the water being much lower than that of the conventional hulls.
