THE DIAMA DAM - EXPERIMENTAL EMBANKMENTS

The access embankment to the structures is a dam, 3,50 to 4,00 M high, the foundation of which rests on mud fill containing local sand, 10 M to 11 M thick laid on a mud substratum. Preliminary studies showed that stage construction methods were a possibility for building the embankments hence the conduct of preliminary investigation operations which comprised in-situ tests and laboratory tests before surcharge tests were carried out on the embankments. An experimental embankment was partly monitored for measuring large settlements and pore water pressure dissipation in the mud fill. Ultimate tests were also conducted on an experimental embankment. Results obtained on test embankments are compared with forecasts from in-situ test results (vane tests in boreholes), with laboratory oedometer tests, with the application of the conventional consolidation theory and of the stability of total stress stability for the embankments tested to failure point. The conclusions obtained showed that it was possible to build the embankment in one stage with an acceptable safety coefficient and that settlement rate will probably be considerably more rapid than the rate mentioned in existing theories. A comparison between laboratory and in-situ test results showed that, in this particular case, the former tended to be more pessimistic than the latter. (TRRL)
